PROTECTION OF INDIGENOUS AND LOCAL KNOWLEDGE IN THE TROPICS

Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr Hajah Asmah Haji Omar’s career at UM began as an assistant lecturer in the Department of Malay Studies. This took her to the position of Senior Professor in the Chair of Malay Linguistics. She was also the Deputy ViceChancellor (Establishment), Director of Language Centre, Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, and (in an earlier period) Special Assistant to the Vice-Chancellor in the Implementation of the National Language Policy of the university. After her retirement with UM, she was invited by the Sultan Idris Universiti of Education (UPSI) to set up the Institute of Malay Civilisation. She has produced books and articles based on her research in Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Australia and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.
