THEME I: Designing Towards Net Zero in the Tropics (Indigenous Design)

Laurent Troost is a Belgian architect who has been based in Brazil since 2008. He holds a Master of Architecture from ISAIVH in Brussels (2001) and a Postgraduate Degree from Escola da Cidade in São Paulo (2011). Troost is the co-founder of two architecture firms, “Laurent Troost Architectures” and “Troost + Pessoa Architects”, both located in Manaus, Amazonas. His work focuses on integrating nature at various scales and has garnered several international awards, including the Oscar Niemeyer Award, the Akzonobel Tomie Ohtake Award, the Saint Gobain Asbea Award, the Dezeen Award, the Architecture Masterprize, and the IAI Most Creativity Award. In addition to his architectural practice, Laurent served as the Director of Urban Planning at Manaus City Hall from 2013 to 2020 and has since worked as a consultant for the World Bank Group and the European Union. His research works relevant to the theme of the conference include the Campinarana House, the Tropical Shed Project, and the Botanica Office Building.
